sensitivity reading by hannah
Sensitivity Reader: One with knowledge of certain subjects who reads through stories or manuscripts to make sure there is nothing offense in their field of knowledge. This usually requires either lived experience or a degree.
Qualifications: It’s called life. I only read for things I have personally experienced, mental illnesses that I have professional diagnoses for, such forth and so on. (Concerning my mental health, I have done extensive therapy and research, as well.)
What Will I Read: What’cha got, broseph? Genre does not matter to me. As long as your work has the subject matter I can read for, then I will read it. If it is over 200k, though, I do ask that you confer with me first, as it can depend upon my mental/physical health and the amount of free time I have. Otherwise, I can get it done. (I am also willing to read for just the scenes that involve what you need a sensitivity reader for. Don’t need me for the whole book? Don’t pay for it, then. Get only what you need. Just please be careful in that what you need doesn’t affect the rest of the book!)
What I require: Either a Word doc or a Google doc where I can track changes.
What I will provide: Your document returned to you with tracked comments, problem areas highlighted and explanations as to what is offensive/incorrect and why. I will usually offer different words you can use or different ways to portray what you’re trying to get across. I only provide my thoughts on the story as a whole if you ask.
How long it will take: I usually plan for a day or two. If something drastic comes up where it might take a little longer, I will let you know. It will never be longer than a week unless someone is seriously in the hospital and you will be informed promptly.
Pricing: After many lectures about undervaluing myself, I have decided to set a rate of $0.04 per word based upon the number of things that I can read for and what all I have had to go through in order to be able to read for those things. I am open to payment plans, so don’t feel scared to ask me about that.
Payment Forms: I can take Venmo or Paypal.
